Painting two layered images on one canvas, Joseph has employed the complex ‘anaglyph’ technique to compose his debut collection for Castle Fine Art, X-Ray. Creating a stereoscopic image when viewed with red-cyan glasses, an anaglyph is achieved by overlaying two slightly offset images, each tinted in complementary colours to simulate depth perception.
Marking a new chapter in his artistic journey, Joseph blends science, art and perception to enhance the ethereal and surreal atmosphere of the composition. Joseph’s technique creates compelling images that can be appreciated at first glance, but with further observation, they come to life creating a unique optical experience.

Joseph begins his anaglyph process digitally, crafting a plan for the elaborate details of the artwork. Whilst painting the piece, he switches between red and blue glasses to ensure the illusion of depth remains intact. Working with twelve colours, mixing each tone perfectly, the artist must consider the placement of every brushstroke as anything less than absolute precision will ruin the transition effect.

The ethereal undertones of the X-Ray collection prompt an introspective response in the viewer. By juxtaposing images of beautiful young women against those of skulls, Joseph encourages the contemplation of the concepts of impermanence, transformation and the passage of time. The skulls appear to merge, or emerge, from the females' delicate, slightly translucent faces, creating spectral depth and emphasising a sense of dimensional shift.
The anaglyph form lends itself to the themes Joseph is exploring in this collection as it reinforces ideas of transition between the physical and ethereal. The innocence of the females’ soft skin contrasts against the transience of the timeworn surface of the skull, inviting the viewer to see multiple realities. The duality within these artworks allows Joseph to explore themes of identity, memory and illusion whilst experimenting with his own innovative artistic style to create dynamic and immersive work.
