The popularity of landscape painting coincided with the industrial revolution in the late 19th century. The birth of the metropolitan scene saw centres such as Paris totally transformed into monumental, modern cities; the likes of which no one had ever seen before. This led artists like Claude Monet and Camille Pissaro to capture the hustle and bustle of cities as they grew into the late 20th century which have since become some of the most popular and recognisable artworks in history.
Since then, modern and contemporary artists have continued to build upon the genre of landscape painting by creating electric, calming, powerful and crucial masterpieces that reflect the environments in which we live.
