In 2019, Bob Dylan’s first comprehensive solo museum exhibition, Retrospectrum, opened at the Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai. Attracting over 100,000 visitors in the opening three months, it cemented him as one of the most important contemporary visual artists, and became the most-visited art exhibition that year. Our beautiful hardback book takes viewers on a visual tour of the groundbreaking exhibition, making it a must-have for any Dylan collector.
Showcasing over 180 drawings, sculptures and paintings from collections including The Asia Series, Mondo Scripto, Train Tracks and The Drawn Blank Series, the international exhibition has now moved to the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami, where it will run until April 2022. Following on from its success at the Today Art Museum in Beijing and the Jupiter Museum of Art in Shenzhen, the exhibition includes immersive and interactive displays, along with works from his brand-new Deep Focus series, which transforms scenes from films into cinematic paintings.

Shai Batel, the artistic director of Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai, says: “Bob Dylan is a seminal artist, rightly recognized as one of the defining figures of popular culture for more than half a century. We saw the profound impact and reach of Dylan’s work in Shanghai, where hundreds of thousands came to experience and engage with his remarkable creativity, unique observations and social commentary.
"The exhibition provides visitors with a unique opportunity to view Dylan's journey in the visual arts as well as an introduction to the artist's singular stature as a singer, songwriter, recording artist and concert performer reflected in iconic elements from his storied career."
"Seeing many of my works years after I completed them is a fascinating experience. I don't really associate them with any particular time or place or state of mind, but view them as part of a long arc; a continuum that begins with the way I go forth in the world and changes direction as my perception is shaped and altered by life. "
