Brazil to Miami: inside Romero Britto's studio

When our artist programme manager Manisha Chauhan visited Miami in 2019, she couldn't resist dropping by the studio of Brazil-born Pop artist Romero Britto. And she's in good company, as the legendary English actor Michael Caine later dropped by (watch our video below!). Here, she gives us the lowdown on the sprawling space in the art district of Wynwood.

Britto Central HQ

"It’s so unassuming from the outside. Unless you recognised his art, you would have no idea it was his studio. What a lot of people don’t realise is that all of his work is printed, stretched and embellished here.

“It’s a massive 50,000 sq. ft space that is full of all of his artworks, merchandise and photographs of him with celebrities like Buzz Aldrin, Prince Charles and former US president Barack Obama.

"Plus there’s a Britto forklift, a closet (including a Brillo suit!) and a seat donated by the New York Yankees baseball team. I even met his adorable pet dog, Lisa."

Working with Romero

“I’m a big Romero Britto fan. He’s such a character and really appreciative of what we do. I’ve met him a few times and he’s always been lovely.

"I help to curate art for his shows, and it is so positive that even if you’ve had a bad day it will leave you feeling so happy.

“He’s also incredibly humble, even though he’s a very busy guy. In fact, he was invited to lecture at Harvard University but had to turn it down as he didn’t have enough time!”
