Customise your Nic Joly artwork: 'Out Out' and the #365 collection

Create an artwork that is entirely unique to you with the personalisable new 3D wall sculpture by Nic Joly. Perfect for a gift or to mark a special occasion, the celebration-themed 'Out Out' artwork features customisable letters that are available in any combination of six colours.

Made to order at his Hampshire studio, the handcrafted edition includes the text 'Rave on' with the option to choose from red, orange, blue, silver, purple or green acrylic letters. Nic's signature miniature figures are in full party mode, with intricate details including a handmade glitter ball and even sparkly hot pants! Nic says: "We have had a few months of not going out, not seeing friends, and being isolated from the world. When people walk by, I hope they are reminded to smile, look to the good times, and celebrate life and friendship."

Available in an edition of 365 to reflect an optimistic outlook for the year ahead, the personalisable artwork is accompanied by 'Honesty', which is a touching piece illustrating the fragility of our mental health. Nic adds: "A beautiful thing has come out of our hard time during COVID-19. People have really started to talk about their mental health, and the stigma is finally fading. We are all fragile, and now it is time to embrace that fact and talk honestly about it."

Handmade studio edition wall sculptures

Because each of Nic's artworks is made by hand in his studio, every piece is slightly different. Watch our exclusive playlist for a look behind the scenes, including how Nic individually blew out the yolk from each duck egg to isolate the shell!

All of Nic's miniature figures are carved as originals in wire and plaster before being cast in solid bronze to create a mould. When dry, they are sanded down (either with a belt sander or a teeny-tiny strip of sandpaper) and cleaned before being hand-painted.

His two new releases saw him fashion tiny disco balls from polysterene and plaster; each one was dipped and primed five times before it was covered in glitter and lacquered. Every egg was bleached before he pierced a hole in it with an electric drill, removing shell fragments with a pair of tweezers. The words 'We are all fragile' were printed onto water transfer paper and applied to the egg before it was dried so Nic could paint over the words by hand.

The customisable crystal-mirrored acrylic letters were designed by Nic and are cut with a laser cutter before being hand-polished. He adds: "You can choose how you want the piece to look, and I will make it for you and only you. Each artwork is completely unique. I can’t wait to see all of the different ways you think of!"

#MiniatureArt for art for a big impact

Nic isn't the only artist to embrace the micro art genre. The Japanese photographer Tasuya Tanaka is bringing Asian art to a larger audience with his miniature scenes, while contemporary Tiawanese-American artist Derrick Lin shoots his humorous dioramas with an iPhone. In August 2021, graffiti artist Banksy planted a secret artwork at Merrivale Model Village, while the 2021 Model Art Gallery exhibition - featuring works by artists like Damien Hirst, Sean Scully, Grayson Perry, Cecily Brown and Gillian Wearing - will run at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester until April 2022. "It’s about looking to the next year with hope, happiness, positivity and a love of life. Let’s not just go out…let’s go out out!"
