Mess to masterpiece with Scarlett Raven

If you follow Scarlett Raven on social media, it will be no surprise that her paintings can get very messy. Instead of using a paintbrush, Scarlett prefers to use her hands, dragging oil paints across the surface of the canvas. Before starting, she covers her hands in mechanic's barrier cream, joking that this makes her like an athlete preparing for a race. Once moisturised and protected, she is ready to run!

Capturing movement

Visual movement is essential to Scarlett's emotive pieces, so she captures the energy through the application of paint. By building up colours and textures, she creates depth, forming a backdrop. For the flowers in the foreground, Scarlett lathers the oils into her hands and drips the paint to emulate poppies and flowers. With no prediction of how each petal is going to fall, each finished piece is a surprise.

"The movement must be in every layer, so when you step back you feel like the landscape is alive. It's the magic of knowing that something beautiful is about to happen."
