Paul Corfield’s autumn collection transports us to a serene, yet somewhat surreal, utopia. With his beloved idyllic landscape basking in its warm glow, Corfield introduces different features to these pieces, giving viewers something new to adore.
An escape from the everyday, these dreamlike displays provide us with a home from home. We see his signature white house surrounded by vast countryside and coastal cliffs, a safe space away from the disorder of the city.
Featuring rolling waterfalls and snowy mountain peaks, elements previously unseen in Corfield’s work, we imagine ourselves within them taking a much-needed moment of peace or creating happy memories.
The softness of the pastel hues against the deep greens and rich terracotta creates a mesmerising land of fantasy with notes of pure realism, which involves a deeply technical practice.
Corfield seamlessly blends the landscape together, spending days, sometimes weeks, continuously painting to create the perfect blending techniques in his paintings.
This collection sees an enhanced focus on his use of bounced light, colour theory and the law of reflection to accurately capture the beauty of light and shadow. Each area of the canvas has been painted to truly mirror where the sunrise or sunset would light the backs of clouds, trees, and hills.
Corfield’s creative journey for each piece starts with a pencil sketch that allows him to experiment with bouncing light into shadows. He then transfers the coloured pencil sketch onto a canvas, using the grid method to ensure the composition is exactly right, before beginning an intensive painting process.
He uses a careful layering technique, with each painting including five or six layers of paint. He then adds tiny dots to the trees and flowers to give them life. This can be a therapeutic but challenging process, as it’s all expressed through a vision in his imagination. Corfield doesn’t paint outside or observe his surroundings in real time, he uses his powerful mental visualisation to recall a scene.
The use of colour in art goes beyond the aesthetics of building an image. Artists use colour to establish a mood, convey a meaning and ultimately inject an artwork – and its viewer – with feeling.
