Whilst on tour in Canada in 2007, Billy was inspired by Montreal’s drizzling rain to buy some felt-tip pens and a sketchbook. Over time, his drawings of little islands became intricate yet honest shapes – and Born on A Rainy Day began.
A reimagining of the sold-out artwork released in 2018, ‘And On Monday, God Made The World’ is a special edition graphic inspired by Billy's past as a welder on Glaswegian dockyards. First appearing as sketches in his earlier Born on a Rainy Day collections, the world-famous musician and comedian later transformed these abstract artworks, from sketchpad- to stainless steel- to Giclée artworks! Billy Connolly's iconic artworks have continued to evolve and are now transformed into a colourful fine art limited edition.
Charmingly and unmistakeably witty with distinctive bold lines, as featured by The Times and documentaries including Billy Connolly: It's Been a Pleasure, his minimalist drawings have been described as 'poignant', 'funny' and 'enigmatic' by critics. Billy’s art is simplistic, his faceless figures possess an extraordinary self-awareness and humanity.
Devoid of emotion or expression, their anonymity opens them up to individual interpretation, creating a unique bond with the viewer. Speaking on the famous collection, Billy says: “I just want to keep honing the thing that I’ve got and make it better and better – that’s all. That’s the only ambition I feel."
This piece is a Double Hit Flatbed Giclée Limited edition on Saunders Waterford Aquarelle 300gsm paper and can also be purchased in a set alongside with the limited edition sculpture.

This beautiful edition is hand-signed by the artist, Billy Connolly.
Given Castle Fine Art's expertise as UK's leading art retailer, we are committed to the highest standards specially regarding printing. Derived from the French term gicler – meaning ‘to squirt or spray’, the term describes a printing process whereby microscopic dots of pigment-based ink are sprayed onto archival-quality paper to ensure the fidelity of a limited edition print to an original artwork. The richness, accuracy and depth of colour is thanks to the method’s potential to achieve a huge colour gamut (the spectrum of colours distinguishable by the human eye).
Unlike the four tones used in lithography, giclées often use five: light cyan, cyan, light magenta, yellow and black. It is believed that a giclée will significantly outlast a lithographic print, keeping its vivid colour for up to 200 years.
Every piece of art is mounted, glazed or framed by hand, with our bespoke framing service in Birmingham, selected by our creative department.

In 1995, we opened our first-ever gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon. With just one goal in mind - to make our art accessible to all - our fledgling company began to spread its roots.
