The world-famous musician and comedian’s iconic mixed-media original artworks have no less impact than one of his legendary comedy sketches, with his humour communicated through shapes and lines rather than words.
Now living in Florida, Connolly creates art in his home studio. His art has been likened to the cave paintings of the Aurignacian period (40,000-25,000 BC), which are characterised by their linear, one-dimensional approach. His faceless figures possess an extraordinary self-awareness and humanity. Devoid of emotion or expression, their anonymity opens them up to individual interpretation, creating a unique bond with the viewer.
In his unmistakeable style, Connolly reflects both his Scottish background and his current life in Florida. The mixed-media originals highlight the BAFTA nominated actor, comedian and artist’s distinctive bold lines and contemporary style he’s so famously known for.
Featured Art: Windswept & Interesting (Black & Yellow Stripes)'. A hand-signed mixed-media original artwork by Billy Connolly.
Billy Connolly began his artistic career when he started drawing whilst on tour in Canada in 2007 and picked up paper and pens in a Montreal art store after he’d tired of looking at the animals in the window of a local pet shop. “I’d never drawn in my life until this point, but I just started drawing weird islands and carried on drawing,” he says. “I asked my wife (Dr Pamela Stephenson-Connolly) to tell me if they were getting better and she said ‘definitely’”. His drawings evolved into his debut fine art collection, Born On A Rainy Day, which launched at Castle Fine Art in 2012.
The relationship between Connolly collectors and his art is a very special one, as Billy’s pieces draw you into his personal world and are almost a visual autobiography. Each piece is hand-signed by The Big Yin himself.
