Nic Joly’s minute depictions of life’s joys, trials and everyday moments have long enchanted audiences, with their meticulous detail and unfolding narratives.
The collection honours Nic’s pride in his art to date, whilst heralding the creative potential ahead of him, and includes a selection of collector beloveds and Nic’s own favourite pieces from the last ten years
Since watching his father carve wood in his workshop as a child, to his former career as a furniture designer and now as an artist, Nic has continually pushed the boundaries of his technical prowess.
His pieces, often composed of mixed materials such as wire, paper, and found objects, encapsulate an ingenious and innovative approach to contemporary art. Each component goes through a complex conception which can involve carving, casting, moulding, sanding and hand-painting, before the painstaking construction of the artwork begins.
They are crafted with exact precision, capturing scenes that range from the humorous and light-hearted to the poignant and thought-provoking. Nic bares a piece of himself through every artwork, saying, “We are all small parts of a big machine, that’s what the work is about. Small and vulnerable figures who can tackle anything. The works are bits of theatre. The theatre of life.”
Each artwork tells a story featuring tiny human figures placed in unexpected contexts. This conscious contrast provokes reflection on concepts of love, joy, struggle and resilience, a deeper contemplation about the intricacies of daily life, whilst inviting the viewer to discover a new detail with every glance.
Nic's work celebrates what truly makes us human. A decade on, his contribution to the world of miniature art continues to inspire and captivate, solidifying his reputation as a master of the form.
The first five artworks are available now in two sizes; a Collector’s Edition and a Concept Edition. The final instalment of The Next Chapter will be available later this year.
