Dr. Seuss

Born:
Massachusetts, United States
Lives and works:
Massachusetts, United States
Education:
Dartmouth College; Lincoln College, Oxford.
Awards:
Pulitzer Prize (1984 )

From early advertising and editorial cartoons to seventy years of paintings, drawings, and sculpture, Dr. Seuss’s horned, whiskered, and winged creatures played while contemplating the issues of the world within deco-inspired landscapes of pure nonsense. The iconographic images became the basis of Ted’s most well-known books for children and highlighted the vital importance of unimpeded childhood fun. Dr. Seuss has surpassed nearly all 20th century artists in this regard, having now sold over 650 million books worldwide.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little-known editorial cartoonist in the 1920s. His intriguing perspective and fresh concepts ignited his career, and his work evolved quickly to deft illustrations, modelled sculpture, and sophisticated oil paintings of elaborate imagination. His artistic vision emerged as the golden thread that linked every facet of his varied career, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered numerous children’s books, hundreds of advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters, and humour.

Many of today’s top visual artists, poets, filmmakers, and authors cite Ted as one of their greatest influences. Indeed, what Walt Disney was to entertainment, Theodor Seuss Geisel was to art and literature.

Geisel single-handedly forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the surrealist movement of the early 20th century and the inspired nonsense of a child’s classroom doodles. The Art of Dr. Seuss project offers a rare glimpse into the artistic life of this celebrated American icon and chronicles almost seven decades of work that, in every respect is uniquely, stylistically, and endearingly Seussian.

In the spring of 1984 Ted won a Pulitzer Prize “for his contribution over nearly half a century to the education and enjoyment of America’s children and their parents.”

Classic Character Art

Dr Seuss created some of the best-known characters that have been adored by generations of children in his books, which include 'The Cat in the Hat', 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', 'Horton Hears a Who!', 'Green Eggs and Ham, 'One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish', 'Fox in Socks' and 'Hop on Pop'. The loveable creatures from these books, plus several more, are featured in our new limited edition artworks.

Geisel’s simple words, honest emotion and illustrations brimming with wit and originality have created iconic books with characters and situations which stay with readers long after childhood has passed, and his works have been passed down from generation to generation since 'The Cat in the Hat' was first published in 1957. The books have been made into much-loved films and are recognised by readers all around the world. Now it’s your chance to own an incredible Dr Seuss limited edition artwork which everyone, no matter what age, can enjoy.

Theodor Geisel always believed that: “fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.” This indispensable life skill allows us to see what is essential, no matter how big the idea or task. And in the case of Dr Seuss, it always keeps us laughing as we encounter the many twists and turns in life.

So don’t miss out on the chance to own a piece of children’s literary history which probably forms a major part of your own personal history.
