This tranquil giclée print on glass by Richard Rowan was created during UK lockdown and its unique, monochromatic colour palette takes inspiration from Richard's sense of self-reflection during this time. The effect of the smooth black paint on glass is a mirror-like reflection that also does not take away from the depth and detail of the piece. The trees in this artwork symbolise nature's lungs and the soft clouds behind is like the sensation of slowly filling your own lungs with air. Breathing slowly, remaining calm, staying present, the four birds in this painting also represent Richard and his family who worked hard to practice these values during a time when many of us found it difficult.
Using a selection of ingenious techniques to create his intricate and atmospheric artworks, Richard first selects a piece of music which he associates with a particular time and place. This was 'We Will Survive' by August Willhelmsson from his album Transfixed for the painting, 'Breathe In, Breathe Out'. He then replays this music while he paints to evoke the surroundings and emotions he felt in the original landscape.
At the same time, Richard uses his own revered technique of reverse painting onto glass. Starting with the foreground before painting backwards until all he can see is the vague strokes of his background, the artist is able to capture the minute details of stars against a raw backdrop of richly coloured skies; preserved within the layers of paint on glass.

From the Icelandic wilderness to the fiery horizons of Thailand and towering mountains of Norway to spectacular Scotland, his atmospheric scenes allow viewers to escape from everyday life, creating a sense of intrigue in any living space. Richard is the only artist to be creating art in this style, and his incredible landscapes are so detailed that they are often mistaken for photographs, when in fact each one has been meticulously painted by hand using his reverse painting technique.
As the only fine artist successfully creating artworks in this style, Richard has become a part of the history of the glass art form, which dates back to Roman times and can also be seen in the Gothic period. Unlike canvas, glass interacts with the light, bringing his works to sparkling life.
