Known for his collaborations with brands like Absolut Vodka, Disney and Samsung, Brazilian-born Romero Britto brings joy to his collectors with his vibrant cartoon-style paintings. So it’s only fitting that he will be working with Nickelodeon to create mixed-media art for the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants.
As we take a look at the Miami-based artist’s other career highlights, we are excited to reveal his five new hand-embellished artworks. Each of these colourful creations features diamond dust applied by hand and oil pen by Romero himself.
If a star on Miami’s Walk of Fame wasn’t a big enough symbol of Romero’s stellar status in the artworld, his collector list certainly is. Celebrities who have owned his work include Alice Walton, Andre Agassi, Whitney Houston, Michael Jordan and Carlos Slim.
CSI Miami actor David Caruso owns an impressive 12 paintings. He told The New York Times: “There is an onus placed on many artists to go to hipper, glibber, darker places with their work to make a statement, when in reality, Romero is exploring the other side of that expression – the happiness of life.”
From Dolce and Gabbana’s closing dress in their 2018 Alta Moda show to Coca Cola’s ‘Happy Holidays’ campaign back in 2011, Romero has worked with some of the biggest names in the world. His collaborations with Barbie, Betty Boop and Disney have seen him transform some of the world’s best-loved characters, including Tinkerbell, Dumbo and Winnie the Pooh.
And it isn’t just his collaborators that are on a large scale; he’s created giant displays for venues and events including the APM Mall in Hong Kong, Carnival Brazil and Super Bowl XLI 2006 in Miami - with the latter watched by 140 million people.
Raised as one of nine children to a single mother in Recife, Brazil, Romero has never forgotten his humble roots. Living by his own motto - ‘Art is too important not to share’ - he has donated time, art and resources to over 250 charitable organisations, including The Prince’s Trust.
In 2017, to celebrate the singer’s 70th birthday, he donated 50 of his ‘Music Man’ portraits to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The original work sold for £130,000, with Elton describing it as a “fun, fabulous, rock ‘n’ roll portrait” and all proceeds going to the charity.
