From rearing horses to capturing at-risk wildlife in his 1995 Endangered Species Suite, Ronnie Wood has long illustrated his passion for protecting animals.
In September 2018, he took part in the Tusk Rhino Trail, a London-wide art installation that celebrates the magnificence of the rhino and draws attention to the severe threat of poaching. Each fibre-glass rhino was specially designed, decorated and embellished by internationally-renowned artists including Marc Quinn and Jonathan Yeo.
Ronnie's creation, 'Spike', was created in collaboration with his twin daughters, Alice and Gracie. It raised an enormous £200,000 for the Tusk Trust when it was sold at auction by Christie's. Funds will now directly support conservation work across Africa, including efforts to stop illegal wildlife trade.
“My inspiration is that this beautiful prehistoric creature should be around for future generations of our children to see. I tried to include motifs from the African flags of the main rhino populated regions. As the rhino wanders the plains, it makes me think – it is Spike in another form!”
