Here, Nigel Mason departs from the traditional medium of oil paint and enters the more radical realm of pastel, popularised by Edgar Degas in the 19th century.
Much like Degas, Nigel has focused on his subject matter and how light and space interact with the ballerina form, rather than how they interact with the space – as represented by the simplistic background.
The result is a timeless and atmospheric depiction where the bright colours of their costume emerge from a dark vastness, drawing parallels with the Impressionistic sympathies of Degas and other pastel artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Nigel’s art is inspired by his childhood in 1950s Yorkshire. His touching oil paintings were a talking point at our Summer Exhibition in 2015, where he appeared as an IN:SIGHT finalist.
In 1995, we opened our first-ever gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon. With just one goal in mind - to make our art accessible to all - our fledgling company began to spread its roots.
Every piece of art is mounted, glazed or framed by hand, with our bespoke framing service selected by our creative department.
Our foundations are built on a passion for art, and many of our staff (and collectors!) have been with us from the very beginning.
