5 QUESTIONS WITH DAN LANE BLOG BANNER

Dan Lane reveals new sculpture in YouTube video

Our 5 Questions With YouTube video series takes you behind the scenes of the latest collections from our world-class contemporary artists. In our exclusive video, the former engineer Dan Lane talks us through his new stainless steel sculpture, 'When All Is Equal'.

As you can see for yourself in our close-up shots, this intricate 3D artwork intertwines an incredibly lifelike hand with Dan's signature tattooed elements and hummingbird motif. Dan says: "For me, I like to have that mix of dark and light, and I think a hummingbird is about as delicate and elegant and beautiful as you can get. I wanted to create a sculpture that showed that mankind and the natural world can live in balance and harmony as equals."

Presented on a black granite base, the limited edition sculpture also draws upon Dan's traditional inspirations and 15-year career as an engineer. He explains: "I really like that classical Baroque marble sculpture style that you'd see in a Venetian church; I often go to Italy and walk around the churches. Having that engineer's mind, you figure out how to make things fit together. There was a lot of research and development to make the hummingbird look like it's floating."

Why sculptures are perfect for saving space

If you don't have unlimited wall space, sculptures are a fantastic way to make a style statement. Adding a focal point to your bookshelves, office desk or coffee table, these space-saving artworks are discreet enough to fit into your home décor, yet bold enough to express your personality.

With mantelscaping - using the space above your fireplace to display art and home accessories - one of 2021's biggest trends, it's a great time to embrace the transformative power of the sculpture.

Reflecting beautifully in the light, the modern metallic finish of Dan's new sculpture is juxtaposed by its intricate details, which are inspired by classic artists like Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Michelangelo and Antonio Canova.

'When All Is Equal' is the newest addition to Dan's Modern Relics series, which features a selection of original and limited edition artworks cast in bronze, stainless steel and marble.
