In the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing, Kenton was inspired to create this vibrant and electric cityscape. Depicting the brilliant neon-lit Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, Japan, this signed oil aluminium original captures the hectic movement of people, illuminated by the colourful, glittering billboards towering above.
Rather than a still moment in time, the artist tries to capture a sequence of movements in his cityscapes, resulting in a hypnotising and energetic piece with a riot of fluorescent colours, sparkling lights, bold dripped lines, and a vivid colour palette.
In this new collection, Kenton’s showcasing some of the most iconic cityscapes notorious for their vibrant atmospheres and unique architecture: London, New York, Venice, and Tokyo. As a running theme through Paul’s paintings, he has used light source as his main inspiration to capture a combination of romantic and lively atmospheres, through his style of impressionist painting. Painted on metal, the artist uses oil paint that can go up to 20 layers. Kenton leaves some of the metal exposed which gives another dimension to light, allowing it to reflect surrounding surfaces. All the light is emphasised from the darkness, creating a beautiful strong contrast.

Paul Kenton is a UK-based contemporary artist, acclaimed for his cityscape paintings which capture the unique energy of cities across the world. Paul’s paintings aim to transport the viewer, giving them a sense of the distinctive mood, pace and light of a scene, through layers of bold colour, dripped lines and gestural paint marks. Kenton is constantly exploring new ideas for paintings in his sketchbook, painting en plein air, drawing not only from cityscapes, but also from his fascination with motorsport, the sea and pop culture.
