Bisaillon Brothers

The Bisaillon Brothers are the masters of creating images of pop culture greats in their signature style, and in their new Icon pieces, part of their POP collection, they celebrate four strong women. “Two pieces feature women from the 20th century and two from the 21st, the collection is almost a ‘then and now’ depiction of amazing strong women across two centuries,” say the brothers.

The new pieces include 'Icon - Liz' and ‘Icon - Audrey’ depicting actors Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn, showcasing the timeless style of Hollywood glamour from the 20th century, and ‘Icon - Beyoncé’ and ‘Icon - Kate’ musician Beyoncé Knowles and model Kate Moss female trailblazers and fashion icons from the 21st, portrayed on the front covers of couture magazines.

These covers were consistently sophisticated and occasionally revolutionary, pushing boundaries in design and capturing the essence of cultural trends. Over time they have encouraged readers to explore new styles and express their individuality.

Fresh from their New York studio, their work has appeared in the likes of Artexpo New York (2019), Art Basel (2018) and Spectrum Miami (2018).

The brothers have a unique, hands-on approach to creating their art. All of the pieces are mixed media and incorporate a range of mediums, including canvas, wood, paint, pen, resin, spray paint, digital imagery and even building materials.

Jeffrey is an abstract painter and applies and removes paint in methodical layers before paint is flung through the air to drip down the panel and canvas. Michael is an electrical technician and uses binary and trinary code to create the number systems and codes on each piece.

It is a timeline of technique: from traditional painting to colour theory, printmaking, photography and digital art, the pair have amalgamated each of history’s milestones to form their own genre. Jeffrey’s passionate brush strokes illustrate his affinity for abstract and modern art, while Michael is captivated by the symbology and digital art process.

The Bisaillon Brothers’ POP collection portrays iconic people we love and respect and brands that enhance our life experience. These images are a combination of colourful abstracts by Jeffrey with inspiration from the evolution of art that occurred after photography. Symbology and the digital tools of today are utilized by Michael and the POP Collection continues to evolve.

With the increasing commercialization of everything, branding has become ubiquitous. The red UPC code on each art piece – the striped symbol - glares out at us and distinctly defines the Brothers’ work. Jeffrey and Michael Bisaillon’s Revolution collection of extraordinary pop art originals and limited editions features music icons David Bowie and The Beatles, all Vinylgraphs - 3D pop art records which float off the wall, and, of course, feature the Brothers’ trademark trinary codes.

The Revolution Vinylgraphs are born from the American brothers’ love of vinyl records. Their father is a huge music fan who has a collection of six jukeboxes and thousands of 45rpm singles. This gave them the inspiration to create a unique and innovative piece of artwork based on the timeless vinyl disc.

“All of the Vinylgraph pieces are bedded in history like a lot of the works we produce,” say the Brothers, “starting with personal and cultural favourite 45’s which are then researched to give the layers of thought and historical reference. They not only create an attractive and aesthetically pleasing finished piece but work as visual aids to a specific place in time, like a good song transporting you to where you were when you first heard it. There is a huge amount of nostalgia associated with vinyl records where a certain record can tie the past with the present in the mind. Vinyl records are back in fashion in a big way and have a rich, warm sound that can’t be duplicated by the digital formats of today”.

The Bisaillon Brothers have been developing these exclusive Vinylgraphs for more than two years, working out how to make them with a revolutionary production process which makes these pieces unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

The New York pop art duo bring champagne style to their Pop Collection of iconic people and brands in September 2022 with a group of four new champagne-themed limited edition works entitled ‘Urban Fizz’ which illustrate classic brands through a range of media including resin, acrylics, graphic design and code. 

Exploring architecture and fine art, this series sees a flawless resin surface offset by vibrant geometric holes, which the brothers call "lightwells". These repeated holes lend themselves to concepts of minimalist sculpture, while the vibrant colours deliberately project light onto the surface behind to further extend the impact of the artwork.

This strikingly contemporary series captures sirens from the silver screen and figures from pop culture – including the famous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde! Along with monochrome and multicoloured elements, some of the pieces feature a hint of glitter in the resin to add a different feel and texture.

The minimalist holes add another dimension to the surface of the artworks, which incorporate vintage imagery – including real-life photography, publicity stills and posters – plus iconic quotes and brand logos.
