This piece was painted during the summer of 2017 and was inspired by the British and Irish Lions rugby tour in New Zealand.
Its wildlife theme incorporates both a lion’s call to the pride, and the pride a player must feel when representing their country. David used a new technique, painting it ‘inside out’ by using a red mid-tone and applying colour from dark to light. He splashed paint organically to try and capture the different textures, such as the sandy tones of a lion’s fur.

A strong believer in painting from the heart, David Rees captures the stories of animals and humans in his striking oil paintings.
In 1995, we opened our first-ever gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon. With just one goal in mind - to make our art accessible to all - our fledgling company began to spread its roots.
Every piece of art is mounted, glazed or framed by hand, with our bespoke framing service selected by our creative department.
Our foundations are built on a passion for art, and many of our staff (and collectors!) have been with us from the very beginning.
