Richard Rowan

Spring 2025

Inspired by his favourite places to visit with his family, contemporary fine artist, Richard Rowan, has placed the Scottish landscape at the heart of this new collection. Fascinated by the nature that surrounds us, Rowan explores a sense of change in these paintings, showing that landscapes are not still, they are constantly transforming. Studying landscapes frame by frame, the artist is always watching for the perfect moment to immortalise on glass, aware of even the smallest shifts in his surroundings. Often finding himself lost in moments of observing a landscape, Rowan shares the feelings of awe and escapism that he experiences in nature through his artwork for people to enjoy in their own homes. Encouraging people to stop and enjoy the endless nuances and drama of nature, Rowan hopes that his work will prevent people from taking the beautiful landscapes that surround us for granted.

The Dark Knights | 2022

This 2022 installation of Robert Oxley's collection The Dark Knights: Close Encounters sees the artist transform three big cats into 'ethereal, astral' beings through his kaleidoscopic use of colour and form. Inspired by mythology and Arthurian legend, these limited edition artworks harness the powerful image of a lion, tiger and jaguar to create artworks that comment on the simultaneous strength and vulnerability of some of our endangered species of big cat. Focussing on the face, Robert painted eyes of the animals first, keeping them at his eye level as he finished the piece so as to always "have dialogue with the animal".

Exciting new wildlife collaboration | 2022

We’re hugely proud to announce that in a first for Castle Fine Art, two of our wildlife artists have collaborated on a new piece. This limited edition work combines the stunning wildlife photography skills of Alfie Bowen with Robert Oxley’s signature kaleidoscopic use of colour and form. The result is ‘Baikal’ - Alfie’s captivating photograph of a white tiger looking straight down his camera lens, completed with Robert’s signature psychedelic paint style, applied sympathetically to the image. We release this piece in collaboration with The Big Cat Sanctuary, where Alfie and Robert met, and fell in love with, one of the sanctuary’s most popular and famous residents. Baikal is a gorgeous white tiger named after Lake Baikal in Siberia who has been at home at The Big Cat Sanctuary since 2020. Castle Fine Art will donate £100 from every sale to the Sanctuary. Robert Oxley says: “It's an honour for me to be involved with The Big Cat Sanctuary. Through partnerships, initiatives and vital research the sanctuary helps protect the most endangered cats in the world.”

The Dark Knights | Heart of Darkness | 2021

Add a touch of the wild side to your home décor with the fierce Heart of Darkness release from Robert Oxley. As the second instalment from The Dark Knights, this contemporary collection depicts three of the planet's deadliest wild cats: a tiger, leopard and snow leopard. Robert delved into Chinese, Sanskrit and Jewish mythology to bring these tales of darkness and mystery to life. His shadowed cats symbolise both the power of the night and universal fears, encompassing demonic figures and female deities. Unlike the first instalment - which featured a neon tiger, lion and jaguar - the collection also has a self-described 'heavy metal thunder' colour palette, with deep purples and blacks accented with yellows and greens for a moonlit feel. Each hand-signed, limited edition artwork is printed on a 100% cotton canvas with a high-gloss acrylic giclée varnish for an incredible depth of colour. By focusing on the animal's body, Robert has created the illusion that they are about to step out of the canvas. He explains: "The cats are stepping into the light and leaving the darkness behind them. It's a new beginning."

The Dark Knights | 2017

Dark, deadly and dangerous, the first instalment of The Dark Knights by the wildlife artist Robert Oxley saw him return to his neon colour palette and adopt an exciting new perspective. Instead of focusing on the face, Robert painted the animals' full body, and the effect is startling: the predators step out of the darkness and seemingly off the canvas. The painter, whose art appeared in a January 2021 episode of Channel 4's Grand Designs, took inspiration from natural history and medieval legend for these hand-varnished artworks. To mirror the 2D effect of Robert's original artworks, our specialist atelier team carefully reimagined the painting using state-of-the-art techniques. The canvas is 100% cotton, creating a premium, high-definition effect, while the high-gloss acrylic giclée varnish offers a great depth of colour and extra UV protection.

"The cats are stepping into the light and leaving the darkness behind them. It's a new beginning."

The artist

Robert Oxley

As a child, Robert Oxley spent his hours roaming the forests around a north-east coalmining village, dreaming of becoming a zookeeper. Today, the lions, tigers and elephants who roamed his imagination are given life in his dazzling wildlife paintings. Immersing himself in pop surrealism, Oxley presents viewers with what he calls 'psychedelic natural history'.

Oxley's affinity with nature is evident in every instinctive brushstroke. He began his art career by painting his school friend's denim jackets with the logos of their favourite heavy metal bands. This rock 'n' roll ethos can be seen in his art, with its loose paintwork and free attitude, which makes it so popular with his many collectors.

Oxley is passionate about conservation, and is involved with several projects, including a hugely popular collaboration with photographer Alfie Bowen, which benefitted The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent. About the endangered species he paints, Robert says: 'Although they do face adverse threats, we can take solace in the fact that through combined efforts these animals are now thriving.' He is a hugely positive person who likes to focus on the successes in the world of wildlife conservation, and his work illustrates this perfectly.

Echoing his passion for conservation, Oxley's artworks are printed on a 100% cotton canvas, with the pine stretcher bars sourced from sustainably managed forests.

As well as lions, tigers and elephants, he has also portrayed British animals, pandas, birds and even the cast of The Muppets! But it's his trademark big cats for which he is best known, paintings which transport viewers into a fantastical realm where animals take on a new dimension of consciousness. He describes these magnificent creatures as a "stealthy power that lurks in the shadows, ready to strike its prey."

Commenting on his Triumph series, which featured lions, tigers and gorillas, he said: 'I wanted to use these iconic species in this collection to portray the family bond, kinship and soulful connection we have with these animals. I believe the titles symbolise primal instincts that we all have within us', adding: 'I don't need an excuse to paint tigers; I could paint them every day!'

His studio is filled to the brim with natural history books and reference photography, which he reworks and reimagines for his original paintings. His signature 'drip' effect is created by letting paint run down the canvas before building up colour with successively thicker application. This gives his work a hallucinatory feel.

"The more I can throw down and the more abstract the shapes are, the more enjoyable the battle is,' says Oxley about his practice. 'I've heard that the Abstract Expressionist painter Jackson Pollock said that if he planned a painting, he'd never make a mark. My work depends on spontaneity and a free association: I don't really need an inspiration; I just do it." While painting, he listens to music, natural history documentaries and true crime podcasts.

Along with his conservation work - which includes donating an artwork to raise money for the Koala Hospital in New South Wales after the Australian bushfires - his passion for learning more about the environment feeds into every piece he paints.
