A blend of Giclée printed foreground with meticulously hand-painted background, ‘Journey Beyond XVIII' is a vibrant series of unique mixed media artworks inspired by the enchanting landscapes of Scotland.
Evoking a profound sense of calm due to the vast emptiness, the artwork portrays a moment of reflection and contemplation, it’s focal point inspired by a tree Rowan and his family came across while travelling through the highlands and affectionately named ‘our Rowan tree’. Capturing the unique beauty of the landscape and ever present essence of family, this unique artwork is a mesmerising tribute to the many incredible vista’s of nature and the changing views possible in just one spot with the passing of time and light.
With magical orange hues, ‘Journey Beyond XVIII’ is an electric landscape, evoking a sense of grandiosity and calm, highlighted by its reflection in the water.
A pioneer of reverse painting on glass Richard Rowan has created an atmospheric scene that allows us to escape from everyday life and take notice of the changing possibilities of nature. The sky takes full stage, framing the detailed silhouette of the tree with an incredible gradience of colour and depth.
“I love the process of creating these unique artworks and creating new tones and palettes within my work, there are endless inspirations in nature and that’s really what I’d love these Unique collections to capture.”
While working on this collection of unique artworks, Rowan listened to Tony Anderson's album "The Heart Of Man” which profoundly influenced the ambiance of the pieces.
Produced in high-quality giclée on glass, Rowans silhouetted foreground has been reverse printed in layers onto glass perfectly reflecting the incredible techniques used in his original artwork and returned to his London studio. There Rowan has meticulously hand-painted each vista using his reverse painted layering technique, often involving several coatings of paint to be applied, taken away and built in complex blended layers to create a completely unique image with incredible depth and photorealism.

This artwork is hand-signed by the artist, Richard Rowan. The artworks in this collection are uniques, a blend of Giclée printed foregrounds with one-of-a-kind individually hand-painted backgrounds.
On each of Richard Rowan’s Unique artworks is a transparent viewing panel to allow collectors to see the incredible reverse painting process behind their creation.
Rowan is the founder of his ‘reverse painting’ on glass medium and a true pioneer of his artistic endeavours. Beginning with the foreground and adding detail in layers, this technique requires great concentration and skill. By using glass as a canvas for his paintings, Richard creates a much smoother gradient of colour and a broader spectrum of shades.
From the Icelandic wilderness to the fiery horizons of Thailand and towering mountains of Norway to spectacular Scotland, his atmospheric scenes allow viewers to escape from everyday life, creating a sense of intrigue in any living space. Richard is the only artist to be creating art in this style, and his incredible landscapes are so detailed that they are often mistaken for photographs, when in fact each one has been meticulously painted by hand using his reverse painting technique.
As the only fine artist successfully creating artworks in this style, Richard has become a part of the history of the glass art form, which dates back to Roman times and can also be seen in the Gothic period. Unlike canvas, glass interacts with the light, bringing his works to sparkling life.
