Hand-signed Lithograph on paper limited edition by Bob Dylan.
Opening Highway 61 Revisited, 'Like a Rolling Stone' marked Dylan's towering transformation from folk troubadour to rock provocateur. At more than six minutes in length, its electric intensity forced radio to abandon the three-minute single. Lyrically, the song offers a portrait of a woman’s fall from grace and subsequent social isolation. Dylan’s illustration provides an equally astute visual counterpart to the song’s fallen subject, modelled on Paul Delaroche's 1840 painting of a slouching and defeated Napoleon Bonaparte at Fontainebleau, reflecting the lyrics, ‘You used to be so amused / At Napoleon in rags’. Colour is used unmistakably to project this image of grandeur now gone: his cheeks and knees are flushed and muddied, and his once resplendent coat now appears faded and discoloured.
First album release: Highway 51 Revisited, 1965
Mondo Scripto, first exhibited at Halcyon Gallery in 2018, expanded that practice into a sustained and systematic project, as Dylan handwrote the lyrics to many of his best-loved songs and paired them with graphite drawings, weaving together decades of familiar songwriting with his personal artistic imagination. Dylan has returned to this format, injecting colour into several of his illustrations, extending Mondo Scripto’s dialogue between text and image into artworks altogether more immediate and instinctive.
Now, in a new collection of six hand-coloured illustrations, issued as a series of lithographic works, Dylan returns to some of his most celebrated and lyrically complex songs, revisiting them in colour, while working in the same vein as his Drawn Blank and Point Blank series. Selected from a decade of Dylan’s writing, 1964 to 1974, these six works trace an arc through some of the most consequential and formative years of his career.
Dylan’s move into colour does much to advance his earlier graphite drawings, bringing new emotional registers, insights and layers to the songs, decades after their initial conception.
This artwork is also available in a framed set.
