Dr. Seuss | 2023

From early advertising and editorial cartoons to seventy years of paintings, drawings, and sculpture, Dr. Seuss’s horned, whiskered, and winged creatures played while contemplating the issues of the world within deco-inspired landscapes of pure nonsense. The iconographic images became the basis of Ted’s most well-known books for children and highlighted the vital importance of unimpeded childhood fun. Dr. Seuss has surpassed nearly all 20th century artists in this regard, having now sold over 650 million books worldwide.

Inspiration

Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little-known editorial cartoonist in the 1920s. His intriguing perspective and fresh concepts ignited his career, and his work evolved quickly to deft illustrations, modelled sculpture, and sophisticated oil paintings of elaborate imagination.

His artistic vision emerged as the golden thread that linked every facet of his varied career, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered numerous children’s books, hundreds of advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters, and humour.

Many of today’s top visual artists, poets, filmmakers, and authors cite Ted as one of their greatest influences. Indeed, what Walt Disney was to entertainment, Theodor Seuss Geisel was to art and literature. Geisel single-handedly forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the surrealist movement of the early 20th century and the inspired nonsense of a child’s classroom doodles.

The Art of Dr. Seuss project offers a rare glimpse into the artistic life of this celebrated American icon and chronicles almost seven decades of work that, in every respect is uniquely, stylistically, and endearingly Seussian. In the spring of 1984 Ted won a Pulitzer Prize “for his contribution over nearly half a century to the education and enjoyment of America’s children and their parents.”
