Recreating a child's enjoyment of creating their own adventures with figurines and imagination, Nigel's artworks allow us to revisit the awe and wonder of our younger years. His adorable miniature paintings capture some of the world's most iconic characters, from Marvel and DC Comics superheroes to real-life music stars and the cast of the Star Wars saga.
Nigel Humphries is passionate about recreating the feelings of childhood nostalgia and will always go that little bit further to add extra magic to his paintings. He is skilled at evoking the youthful wonder of losing yourself whilst playing with a favourite toy, and also bringing his fine art mastery to create the scene.
As an incredibly skilled contemporary still-life artist, Nigel is always driven to achieve perfection in his work, both to satisfy his artistic development and the demands of fans of the characters he paints. He always researches the look of those characters in depth by watching films and listening to their soundtracks as he paints, as he’s very aware that collectors expect the details in his works to be totally correct. Another part of creating the detailed look is the use of toys in his studio which are carefully posed in a still-life scene.
The hugely-popular artist Nigel Humphries brings us a magical new collection of limited edition giclée prints that are sure to enthral fantasy fans everywhere. Nigel’s exciting new collection of limited edition giclée prints, featuring the iconic characters from the fantasy world we all know and love, has been eagerly awaited by his army of collectors.
Featuring his signature character work and ripped paper motif, the new collection is one that he’s really enjoyed creating. “This has been an amazing project to work on, filled with many colourful and interesting characters,” says Nigel. “It was really difficult to choose which ones to include in this collection, as there are so many strong and beloved characters to choose from. I felt sure that I wanted the paintings to give a snapshot of some of Harry’s journey from his early days at Hogwarts when he was small and nervous, to his final battle with Voldemort.”
After a four-year gap, artist Nigel Humphries returns to painting Marvel-inspired characters with new thrilling originals and limited editions, and he’s as excited as we are to see these icons again! “It’s nice to come back to the subject with fresh eyes after a few years,” says Nigel. “It’s an all-stars release of recognisable characters with a fun twist - a bit like a greatest hits collection, with a few added extras”.
“I was a comic fan as a kid, and Spider-Man and Batman were the main ones - Spiderman is still one of my favourites!”
Nigel’s established concept of creating sets for his figurines calls to mind bygone days of childhood, countless hours rooted in endlessly imaginative play. His signature backdrops, carefully constructed to resemble a homemade stage or movie set, root his characters firmly within their given scenes and give mesmeric depth to each image. Blink, and you could be forgiven for wondering if these figures come to life once the adults stop watching.
Because Nigel’s collectors are so knowledgeable, he does meticulous research for his paintings, and wants to include as much detail as possible to make everything right, especially the costumes. “Iron Man has lots of components in his costume, and so he takes a lot more research,” he explains.” And I listen to dramatic music from the films that goes with the characters, which helps me get in the right frame of mind”.
There are several stages for each painting, beginning with a rough thumbnail sketch to start with. Nigel sometimes makes charcoal sketches on the canvas so he can get the right flowing shapes for the way clothes hang.
Featuring a convoy of Star Wars’ best-known characters – including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca and Darth Vader – Nigel Humphries’ intergalactic new collection is a must-have for any fan of the legendary sci-fi film series.
Behind the scenes of these hand-varnished giclée prints was the miniature painter's very own movie set, complete with his signature character setup and ripped paper motif. The small-scale artworks took the contemporary painter back to his childhood, as he rewatched the original films and listened to John Williams' breathtaking soundtrack for inspiration.
Alongside his limited edition works, we also have a rare selection of original drawings and oil paintings, each of which has been sketched on paper by Nigel's own hand or painted on a fine-grain Italian canvas.
Nigel Humphries' Mixtape series features classic singers and bands including Queen and David Bowie. Following the success of his superhero series, Nigel has untied his cape and dived paintbrush-first into the history of rock and pop icons. The collection takes us back to an era of homemade cassettes and, like any good mixtape, it’s eclectic but it’s one you’ll want to repeat over and over again!
Working from his purpose-built studio in the back garden, Nigel watched videos and researched costumes to capture the energy of his musical subjects. He also experimented with thicker layers of paint to depict the fabric and creases of their stage outfits.
This series had a follow-up collection in 2020 featuring more pop icons.
