Joseph Jones

Born:
Birmingham, UK
Lives and works:
Birmingham, UK

Fascinated by faces from an early age, young contemporary artist Joseph Jones has always been captivated by the stories and emotions that can be that can be expressed through portraiture. Honing his skills through relentless practice and experimentation, Joseph explored a range of techniques before developing his own distinctive dynamic and expressive style. His work is defined by rich colour, intricate texture, and meticulous attention to detail, all aimed at creating atmosphere and narrative within each piece.

Son of veteran Castle Fine Art artist Jon Jones, Joseph has grown up surrounded by creativity, however he has never received any formal training. His impressive colour-mixing skills, vital to his work, are entirely self-taught, coming instinctively as he brings his subjects to life. Born into Generation Z, Joseph draws inspiration from contemporary culture, music and trends, alongside the aesthetics of 80s and 90s film, music, and television. In his artistic journey, Joseph has studied the works of Old Masters such as Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, and Joshua Reynolds, as well as contemporary artists like Jenny Saville. From them, he has learned the nuances of capturing light, realism, and photorealistic detail that now defines his own striking and emotive portraits.

As he continues to grow as an artist, Joseph strives to push the boundaries of portraiture, experimenting with both traditional and anaglyph styles. Constantly challenging and evolving his process, his unique approach to portraiture transforms the paintings from a simple representation of a person into a more expressive and thought-provoking experience.

Stylistic influences

Primarily working with oil paints, Joseph’s work ranges from realistic to highly stylised. Blending traditional techniques with modern influences, his artwork goes beyond likeness and captures the essence of his subject in a way that feels intimate and alive. Sourcing reference images that he finds intriguing, he takes inspiration from Walter Sickert and Edgar Degas, sketching them using a grid technique. Before adding paint, Joseph considers his colour palette in terms of the intensity of the emotions he wants to convey. He then adds paint in layers, carefully creating depth and detail.

Starting each painting with a loose and freestyle allows Joseph to focus on the proportions and composition of the piece. He mixes the first layers of paint with a generous amount of thinner applying them with broad brushstrokes to create fluid, gestural foundations. Not wanting to conceal the expression of the drip marks and broad strokes in these foundation layers, Joseph allows the drip lines and bold strokes to remain visible, adding to the painterly quality of his work. With each subsequent layer, he sculpts the features of his subject, carefully building highlight and shadow to create a striking three-dimensional effect. These elements, combined with his raw and expressive technique, define his powerful and evocative portraits.
