Working within his sketch book, painting en plein air – outdoors – in locations all around the world he draws inspiration not only from cityscapes but also with the sea and pop culture.

Travel is an integral part of what fuels Kenton’s inspiration. He will plan trips to places with the intention of exploring, but it will be the light he sees which naturally takes his interest.

Paul Kenton may describe himself as a ‘country bumpkin’ who lives and works in his beloved north Devon, but he is still a man who adores travel, and the opportunities which globetrotting provides him to make his hugely impactful art. He loves travel, and absorbing the atmosphere of the most exciting and beautiful cities, but the real work happens in Paul’s incredible studio once he arrives home. Here, he discusses his new limited edition pieces created on metal, and featuring New York, Venice, Tokyo and London.

Paul has created these breathtaking new city pieces in his signature style of painting on metal. ”I build up in lots of layers, starting with the sky which sets the scene for how the piece will end up – it could be a warm or a cool painting.

“I build up the paint in what could be 20 layers on the metal. The blurring of some colours on the metal gives a tremendous sense of movement, and I leave some of the metal exposed, which gives the work another dimension by reflecting light. All my paintings are just about capturing the light within a piece and making it create an atmosphere that the viewer can relate to.”

Paul Kenton, the artist making some of today’s most striking landscapes, returns with four more limited editions from his Searching Light collection showcasing his incredible versatility. There are two canvases portraying Paul’s love of the natural world, and two of his trademark city landscapes painted on aluminium.

His fascination with reflection is shown in the new works, which showcase the natural light of the coast and countryside near Paul’s north Devon home, and the neon lights of New York and London. These compelling works draw the viewer in as the light changes around them, making them glimmer and shine in different ways, giving them a tremendous sense of movement and excitement.

As the years pass by, it sometimes feels like they are over in the blink of an eye. Paul Kenton's 365 project saw the artist set himself the challenge of keeping track of each day, taking hold of usually fleeting moments and using them instead as inspiration to create a one-off painting to document magic in the mundane.

These original works are not only evidence of an internationally acclaimed artist's journey, exploring his abilities and putting his ambition to the test, but the chance to seize a minute, hour, day from another year gone by, whilst commemorating memories from significant locations throughout the year. Due to the nature of the project, Paul reached for the nearest tool to create these impressive works, so the collection of plein-air artwork features a variety of different mediums, including graphite, gouache, watercolour, oil, ink, and pastels.

Each artwork is dated and hand-signed, presented in a frame selected specially by Paul to best showcase each piece at its very best. When speaking about his celebrated collection, Paul stated: "These personal one-off artworks give an insight into the moments that stopped me in my tracks, inspiring me to reach for my paintbrush."

The sold-out Copper Collection includes three hand-embellished artworks that capture lively scenes of London and New York. Following extensive research, our specialist atelier team selected a stainless steel base with a copper ink treatment to replicate the textures and tones of the original copper artworks.

Paul, who is also known for his aluminium artworks, has experimented with different mediums in recent years, including copper and wood. For his limited edition prints, the metal was treated with a copper ink at a specified opacity that was designed to allow the finish of the stainless steel to shine through. After this, the details and colours were applied by our atelier team before the prints were hand-embellished with paints, gels and resins to create a 3D effect. As each piece is finished and signed by hand, they are all unique.
