Paulo Ferreira

Born:
Brazil
Lives and works:
Eindhoven, the Netherlands

Every aspect of Paulo Ferreira’s remarkable life can be seen in each piece of art he creates. His paintings have a distinct abstract minimalist style, heavily experimenting with the use of light and shadow. Working predominantly with high contrast colours, Ferreira explores the contrast between his early life and his life today. He creates his paintings in such a way that with every change of light and angle, you see something completely different. Ferreira says his artwork takes a “holistic view of creativity”, encompassing his relationships with religion and spirituality. The art is both defined yet undefined, leaning into the fluidity within Ferreira himself.

Paulo Ferreira’s life began in Brazil. It was here that Ferreira grew up with a strong military influence from his grandfather. Meanwhile, Ferreira’s father was very involved with the Mormon church. The artist soon followed in his father’s footsteps, serving as a missionary for four years and becoming the youngest Mormon priest in Brazil.

After discovering he was gay at age 22, the artist shared the news with his family, the church elders and his congregation. This ultimately led to Ferreira leaving the Mormon church.

Throughout the 1990s, Ferreira travelled extensively throughout Europe. These years still influence him and his art in “every aspect you can think of”, he says. His journey began in Paris, working as a banker, but whilst on a short trip to London he fell in love with the city. Ferreira remained in London for several years and says that the city has a very special place in his heart. Whilst on a holiday to the Netherlands in 1998, Ferreira met his now husband, Giovanni. Paulo Ferreira has lived and worked in the Netherlands ever since.

Ferreira always had a creative impulse. He first began creating art out of necessity at a young age in Brazil where he was selling jewellery for a small profit. Whilst living in London, he began creating line drawings with calligraphy pens. However, Ferreira began to feel constricted by his line drawings and sought out a new medium. The artist compares moving from paper to canvas to a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. It was on canvas that his distinctive style truly began to evolve.

When viewing Ferreira's art, it becomes evident that he puts his soul onto the canvas. As a child, his mother told him that you only ever fully get what you want out of something if you put your full self into it, and Ferreira has absolutely adopted this philosophy. His work is an expression of his true self. Ferreira says that every day he wakes up inspired - his brain tells his body to create and share what he believes to be beautiful.

Stylistic influences

Ferreira creates his striking artworks using oils and acrylic paint on a variety of mediums. His paintings are centred around contrast and space. Each element is proportional, and everything has a surrounding space. This concept of balance is certainly influenced by the artists background in banking and economics. However, Ferreira’s spirituality provides an antithesis to the rigidity of economics, bringing a sense of movement and freedom to his abstract minimalist paintings.

Paulo’s artwork are available to view in a selection of galleries, including Manchester, Bath, Cambridge, Covent Garden, Glasgow, ICC and Marlow.

Abstract minimalism developed in the 1960s with an idea that the art should have its own reality. Traditionally, it detached the artist from the art, inviting the viewer to respond only to what is in front of them. Ferreira’s interpretation of the form is much more fluid. He paints with a strong influence from his own travels and experiences but hopes that the viewer will allow space to place their own meaning on the work.

Work within this genre is often considered entirely truthful as it does not attempt to represent anything other than itself. The raw beauty of abstract minimalist art allows it to be hugely influential and elicit strong emotional responses from the viewer.

“The only thing we know for sure is that nothing is constant. Everything is continuously changing. I don’t live in the now.”

Soul on the canvas

Paulo Ferreira instils a strong sense of himself into each painting that he creates, injecting his own personality into abstract minimalism. Personal experiences of travel and his own fascinating life inspire every brushstroke. The artist says that his biggest source of inspiration is being able to share what he believes to be beautiful and truthful with the world. Ferreira’s paintings explore the interplay between motion and tranquillity, inspiring a serene, meditative mood in the space they occupy.

Abstract minimalism

The abstract minimalist nature of Ferreira’s artwork encourages the viewer to take the paintings at face value and not search for representations of the artist or reality within them. As a genre, abstract minimalism is a purely visual experience offering a purified form of beauty. A feast for the eyes, Ferreira’s paintings are a carnival of colours and swirling patterns. The raw beauty of the artworks is enthralling, with every drop of colour masterfully placed. Using only shades of black and white alongside a palette of primary colours, Ferreira does not paint with any unnecessary complexities. The abstractness of the paintings creates space for the viewer to find their own meaning.

A layered process

Working with layers of thick paint, Ferreira creates depth in his paintings. Throughout the artworks, the paint drips, pools and cracks, giving a strong sense of movement and life to each piece. Ferreira experiments with using the same shapes and colours on both black and white backgrounds, often inverting colours and experimenting with new blending techniques across a series of the same title. The artist always ensures to feature a touch of colour in each piece, even if it is the tiniest dot of red in a sea of black and white.

Ferreira’s process is clearly depicted on the canvas. Every drop of paint and movement of the brush can be seen in the finished piece, lending a rawness to the collection. Painting is a form of self-expression for Ferreira, so he leaves a sense of himself in each piece, spreading joy to people through his artwork and allowing the viewer to immerse themselves in a world without edges or boundaries.

The Power of Colour in Art

The use of colour in art goes beyond the aesthetics of building an image. Artists use colour to establish a mood, convey a meaning and ultimately inject an artwork – and its viewer – with feeling.
