British artistic duo, Peter and Jayne Smith are back with their latest set of tongue-in-cheek artworks in their new collection, Craving Attention.
Part of their popular Shelf Life series, this time the playful pair apply their vibrant vision to the nation’s favourite sweet treat… chocolate.
Pairing staple chocolate brands with iconic song titles, you can’t help but raise a smile at the multiple visual puns and unexpected punchlines in each piece. And of course, Peter and Jayne’s collectors’ favourite Impossimals feature throughout the collection, posing amusingly and indulging themselves.
In this popular new series of artworks, the duo take instantly recognisable brands and taglines and subvert them with unmistakeable British wit and sarcasm. Shining a cheerful light on the everydayness of life and relationships, they capture a connection and relatability between us all.
Featured Art (L-R): 'Drop Your Snickers', 'You'll Do' and 'Sorry, I Was Talking To The Chocolate'. Hand-signed Flatbed Giclée on Canvas Board by Peter Smith.
With meticulous attention to detail and a touch of nostalgia, Craving Attention promises to captivate. Whether you're a long time collector of the Smiths' work or discovering their art for the first time, the original artworks offer a delightful journey into the creative world of the British duo and, of course, the Impossimals.
Craving Attention is part of Peter and Jayne’s contemporary still life series, Shelf Life, which invites viewers to reimagine everyday kitchen cupboard essentials through a playful lens.
Inspired by popular culture, satire, and a desire to rediscover the fun in life, the collection blends together Peter's rich background in character graphics and the duo's humorous approach to life with intricate details and vibrant colours.
Starting out as contemporary still-life paintings with a mischievous twist, the Smiths' creations remind us to recapture a little of that cheeky childhood sparkle we so often grow out of.
Central to which are the Impossimals - a series of artworks conceived by the Smiths. Born out of Peter's expertise in character design and his fascination with capturing expressive personalities while using minimal key features, the Impossimals inject humour and mischief into each painting.
This long-awaited collection pays homage to Peter's childhood dream of creating quirky versions of familar items with the most recognisable brands of today. In the late sixties, Peter started collecting a series of trading stickers by the Topps Company featuring parodies of well-known brands, which still sit in his desk drawer today. From that moment, art entered his life and he dreamt of bringing his own take on consumer culture to life. Shelf Life is a beautifully painted realisation of that long-held dream.
